The Godfather Part II is that rarity of Hollywood: the sequel that lives up to the original. It lives up to the original so much, in fact, that many consider it to be superior to the original. I'm not one of them, although I do feel that this is a masterpiece of a motion picture that does wholly deserve its Academy Award for Best Picture (the only sequel to accomplish such a feat). The Godfather Part II doesn't just give us more of the same. It enriches the characters we already know and love, giving them deep histories and new adventures that surprise and enthrall at every turn. By weaving together a back story of Don Vito Corleone and sequel story of his son Michael assuming control of the family, Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo have created something extra special.
