SALVADOR

1986 **** 122 mins.

1986 was a big year for Oliver Stone. He received many accolades for Platoon, as well as this lesser known gem. James Woods was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Richard Boyle, a down-on-his-luck photojournalist who travels to El Salvador in an attempt to take some amazing photos and make some quick cash. Once down there, though, he is immediately thrown in over his head, and his journey is mesmerizing. I don't think I could sit through it again any time soon, though, hence the red star rating. I would rather watch this than Platoon, though.
