2004 ****1/2 132 mins.

Based, primarily, on the stories "Million Dollar Baby" and "Frozen Water" from F.X. Toole's collection Rope Burns: Stories From the Corner, this Oscar-winner for Best Picture from Oscar-winning director Clint Eastwood is absolutely astounding in many ways. I was particularly fond of the lighting in this film. Clint's music is haunting and the performances are top-notch. There's really not much in the way of a story, just an old boxing trainer taking on a young woman that ends in cheesy tragedy. Plus, like most Eastwood films, it does go on a bit too long. It may not stand up well with repeat viewings, but it is still a well-crafted film.
Original theatrical aspect ratio: 2.35:1 (Panavision)
Rated PG-13 for violence, some disturbing images, thematic material, and language.
