LAST YEAR IN VIETNAM

1971 *** 11 mins.

The main thing I have to say about this first short film from Oliver Stone is that I'm glad I'll be learning French soon. This short film is presented as a special feature on the DVD of Oliver Stone's America, which is fascinating in and of itself. Last Year in Vietnam is only presented with French audio, though, and no English subtitles. Although that may be Stone's intention, to further accent the feeling of isolation in the viewer, I would like to know what the narrator is saying. The short film is very visually stimulating, and it tells the story of a young man living in New York City, just returned from the Vietnam war. It's definitely worth watching to see the young master filmmaker at work.
