2018 ****1/2 92 mins.
From the first trailer I saw for this film, I knew I was going to love it! Thoroughbreds is a brilliant psychological exploration of two very different young women who once were friends. After being apart for a long time, their paths cross again, and they team up to...take care of...the "normal" girl's oppressive stepfather. The film challenges the mind all the way through. What defines normal? Is the "abnormal" girl really all that crazy? Is the stepfather really evil? This film will stick with you long after the credits roll. You'll never forget it, and you'll never want to be without it. Olivia Cooke and Anya Taylor-Joy are unforgettable as the two leads, and Anton Yelchin delivers the best performance I've ever seen of his. It's a shame that this is the last performance he delivered before his untimely death. I think we really would have seen a lot more great work from him in the future, if he had lived.
