The Lure

2015 **** 92 mins.

One of the strangest films I've seen in a long time, The Lure is the first musical to come out of Poland. Based on Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid," The Lure is a bizarre horror/comedy/fantasy/musical in Polish from first time director Agnieszka Smogzynska. It tells the story of two beautiful mermaids who become pop sensations. One of them falls for a human, though, and she gives up her voice and her tail to be with him. If he should marry someone else, though, she will turn into sea foam and cease to exist. It's a movie you're not likely to forget, even if it does feel as though it doesn't elaborate enough in some places.
