ROCKY

1976 ***** 119 mins.

I must admit that the first time I watched this film, I wasn't overly impressed. Years later, when I watched it again, I loved it. Rocky is a multi-layered and textured picture that has something in it for everyone. It's an inspirational story about a man who had nothing and rose up to become someone. It's a film about the sport of boxing, raw and brutal in its boxing scenes. It's a touching love story about a strong but tenderhearted man and a cute, shy young woman. It's a fantastic motion picture experience that remains exciting throughout, yet it has a delicate pacing that remains as calm as its main character. This is a film that perfectly displays how filmmaking can be a game where all the elements happen to come together perfectly for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
