R E D   S P A R R O W

2018 ***1/2 140 mins.

Based upon the novel by Jason Matthews, Red Sparrow is unlike most thrillers you see these days. It's slow, it's not full of action, and most importantly, it's smart. Jennifer Lawrence is incredible as Dominika, a former ballerina who trains to become a "Sparrow," and ends up in a dangerous game of espionage between Russia and the United States. It will leave you guessing right up to the very end. It may not be one of the best thrillers out there; it makes plenty of missteps along the way, but it is still very interesting. My main problem with the movie is that, despite its leisurely pace, it doesn't seem to elaborate enough in a lot of areas.
Original theatrical aspect ratio: 2.35:1 (Digital)
