The Magnificent Ambersons follows the misfortunes of terminally spoiled Geroge Amberson Minifer (Tim Holt), who manages to drag down his loving, lonely mother (Dolores Costello), spinster aunt (Agnes Moorehead), and the rest of his family. The story of his life of willful, selfish sloth and eventual comeuppance serves as the canvas for a glittering Wellesian portrait of America and its transition from the 19th to the 20th century. In its best moments, Ambersons surpasses its immediate predecessor, Citizen Kane and, even with a studio-imposed ending, equals the best screencraft of its decade.
