1974 ***** 90 mins.
Before she made her magnum opus, Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, Chantal Anne Akerman wrote, directed, and starred in this little film about a young woman, unsettled with her place in life. The film is divided into three segments. In the first segment, Julie is alone in her small apartment, writing a letter. In the second segment, she hitchhikes with a truck driver, performs a sexual favor for him, and listens to him pour out his soul. In the third segment, she makes love with her girlfriend. A definite work of art, Je, tu, il, elle is a fantastic film, due largley to Chantal Akerman's fantastic direction and understanding of the female psyche.
