David Gilmour's Rattle That Lock tour took him to various cites around the world, performing in historic venues. None of them quite as historic, though, as the amphitheater at Pompeii, where he performed with Pink Floyd back in 1971. In 1971, though, the band performed over the course of four days all by themselves. When David Gilmour returned in 2016, he performed two shows, both of which were for a full audience. It marked the first public event held at the amphitheater since 79 A.D. That's quite an amazing fact, and it's only fitting that it was David Gilmour to do it. The show is amazing, and it is available on DVD and blu-ray. Just as amazing, though, is this companion album. Featuring the audio just as it appears in the film, it's two-and-a-half hours of pure bliss. I think this is now my go-to live album for anything PInk Floyd-related (The Wall excluded, of course!). The show is heavily loaded with new songs from his most recent album, Rattle That Lock, which is a great album in and of itself, and its inclusions fit in very well with the classic Floyd hits "The Great Gig in the Sky," "Shine On You Crazy Diamond,", and all the others. He also includes a couple songs from his brilliant album On an Island, and even a couple surprise Pink Floyd songs, most notably "Fat Old Sun," from the album Atom Heart Mother. There's plenty to please any fan of Gilmour and Floyd's music.
