BELLE DE JOUR

1967 ****1/2 100 mins.

Luis Bunuel's classic film about a young housewife who decides to spend her mid-afternoons in a whorehouse is a surrealistic near-masterpiece. The film held a strong five star rating for me until the entrance of the Marcel character, who we're not really supposed to like, but I just didn't like how the character was portrayed. Plus, I didn't like who the story ended. It's still a fantastic film experience, though, even if the last act is a bit off.
